Combined side defeats Goulburn in Konica Cup
AN Inspired spell of bowling by Leeton’s Brendon Greatz has helped Griffith-Leeton defeat Goulburn by four wickets in the Konica Cup at Exies No. 1 yesterday. Greatz’s 6-14 off 10 overs effectively cut short a Goulburn innings that was threatening to spiral out of control. The win is a boost for representative cricket in the area, which has had a tough time so far this year. When Griffith-Leeton travelled to the ACT for their first two Konica Cup games in October, they were comprehensively beaten by C&S and the ACT under 19 side. But that was all forgotten with Greatz the shining light for the locals, swinging the ball prodigiously in the humid conditions and leaving many of the Goulburn batsmen wondering what he was going to pull out of his bag of tricks next. Mark Shelly (2-26) and Garth Chambers (1-22) also chipped in for the locals, but the real danger came from just one Goulburn batsman, Jason Apps. Apps single-handedly turned the Goulburn innings into a threatening one, scoring 83 runs from only 89 balls with eight boundaries and one booming six. It is not the first time Apps has dominated the order for Goulburn, but thanks to Greatz and company, his innings didn’t go beyond a century. All up, Goulburn were only able to scrape together 148 from the other 10 players, but Griffith-Leeton still knew they had to score the runs and not think too far ahead of themselves. Coro captain Tim Rand and Phillip Burge got the Griffith-Leeton innings off to a solid start with both batsmen making starts before having their stays at the crease cut prematurely short. Rand (23) and Burge (27) were pried out of the crease with the help of Rob Canning (3-38) and Brad Smith (2-39) who were dangerous all day. Brian Conroy batted well for his 57, adding more than a third of the runs needed and much needed stability. Griffith-Leeton passed the Goulburn score in the 34th over with six wickets down in what was a satisfying victory for the locals.
