LEETON Vietnam veterans are working to help students and residents learn about the Vietnam War by donating a book on its history, which many
members are calling the most factual account yet.
Leeton RSL sub-branch president and Vietnam veteran John Power presented the book, Vietnam, The Australian War, which features Narrandera veteran Private Peter Lawrence Simpson on the cover.
Shire school principals and representatives and town library staff gathered at the Leeton Soldiers Club for the presentation on Friday afternoon.
Mr Power said the book is a powerful read.
“It’s very easy to read, but also incredibly factual,” he said.
“I have no doubt it will become the
primary reference for the Vietnam War, there is information in
there never published before.”
The author, Paul Ham, spent over two years researching the book, including several months in Vietnam and numerous interviews with veterans to gather material.
Mr Power said Leeton residents know too well the significance of the war, with at least 16 fighting in Vietnam.
