Griffith-Leeton needs to lift with the bat, says captain
ANY chance of Griffith-Leeton making the semi-finals for its pool in the Konica Cup rest on a victory over Goulburn at Ex-Servicemen’s Oval on Sunday. The combine came away empty handed after a double-header in October, going down to C&S, where they wasted a winning position, and ACT under 19s. Griffith-Leeton captain Michael Day said a loss will mean the end of its campaign, while a victory will keep the team’s head above water until its last pool clash next weekend in Leeton. “I think we need to win both of our last two matches and hope other results go our way,” he said. “But we really need to win this one for a start. It’s backs-against-the-wall time.” On the back of the disappointing performances in the first two rounds, Day said the combined team will need to improve across the board, especially with the bat. “I think the first thing we need to change is to bat our 50 overs,” he said. “In each of those last two games, we batted first in both of them, and we couldn’t last our 50 overs. “When you do that, you don’t give your bowlers a chance. “The other thing is to take every opportunity we get.” With the Riverina Colts trial also on Sunday and the inclusion of Griffith’s Tom Spry dependent on his fitness, Day said the team will be slightly changed from the double-header. “The team will be a bit different with Todd (Norton), Schuby (Nathan Schubert) and Gerard Stevens all playing in the Riverina Colts trial,” he said. “The team will be more Griffith heavy than last time.”
