SOME people claim they will do just about anything for a mate – but Chris Santarossa gives new meaning to the word friendship.
With his mate Glen Tessari facing years on dialysis and an uncertain future, he has made the lifesaving decision to donate one of his kidneys. Glen suffers from glomerulonephritis, a type of kidney disease caused by inflammation of the internal kidney structures (glomeruli), which help filter waste and fluids from the blood. “Words can’t describe just how great this gift is,” Glen said. “I can never repay or thank him enough. Not to be attached to this machine and go back to a normal life will be amazing.” The last 12 months have been a tough time for the Tessari family, who lost Glen’s mother Imelda in a tragic car accident in January. His father Fausto said after the heartbreaking loss he is grateful for the act of kindness. “I know my wife would have been so thankful for this gift and so am I,” he said. Glen works two days a week at Griffith City Hire and was diagnosed seven years ago after doctors discovered the cause of his severe headaches. He has been on dialysis six hours at a time, three days a week, for the last three years. Glen and Chris will undergo surgery at Sydney’s RPA on March 18, the day before Glen turns 30. For Chris the decision to donate an organ to his childhood friend and groomsmen wasn’t hard. “I thought if I can help improve Glen’s quality of life I would,” he said. “It was pretty amazing when we found out how close of a match we are. “For compatibility we scored four out of six, one number off being brothers.”
