TWO teenagers who pleaded guilty to manslaughter after a fatal bashing on New Year’s Day this year are expected to be sentenced in the NSW Supreme Court today.
The two boys, who are juveniles and cannot be named, last appeared before Justice Megan Latham on November 2, when the court heard the brutal attack was unprovoked after the boys insulted the victim before headbutting and punching him. He later died at Griffith Base Hospital from serious head injuries. A lawyer for one of the boys said the fact they had been drinking alcohol at New Year’s Eve celebrations that night “provides some sort of explanation” for the “uncharacteristic behaviour”. Reading from a Victim Impact Statement to the court last month, the mother of the deceased said it distressed her that her son had died as a result of “such dishonourable and immoral conduct” and called for the two boys to “make things right and good” in the future. Both boys are aged 16 and are likely to receive full-time custodial sentences. The deceased victim cannot be named due to legal reasons.
